Singapore will work with regional peers to provide a framework, regulations, and a solid ecosystem.

Singapore has no current objectives for investing in cross-border infrastructure, according to Minister for Trade and Industry Tan See Leng.

“Our focus is to work with regional partners to provide the framework, regulations, and ecosystem that will enable commercial players to build the infrastructure,” Minister Leng said.

The ASEAN Power Grid is an initiative to integrate the power systems of the ten member states of ASEAN. The vision is to start on cross-border bilateral terms, transition to sub-regional basis and eventually reach a totally integrated Southeast Asia power grid system.

The government is currently working on the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project and has signed contracts related to advancing energy developments. A recent collaboration also includes Indonesia and Singapore’s recent contract on renewable energy cooperation.

Leng said Singapore is committed to playing its part toward renewable energy and decarbonisation efforts.

Singapore is also working on a feasibility study with the US regarding regional energy connectivity in support of the ASEAN Power Grid project.
